Talk: Ben Kerkvliet on Public Political Criticism in Vietnam

Ben Kerkvliet

Dr. Kerkvliet, Emeritus Professor of the Department of Political and Social Change, Australian National University, will speak on the title of his new book due out in June 2019 (Cornell Press): Speaking Out in Vietnam: Public Political Criticism in a Communist Party-Ruled Nation.

The talk is scheduled for Thursday, February 7, 2019 from 12-1:30pm in Moore Hall 319 (Tokioka Room). You can find more information on the talk event page.

About the Talk

In essays, books, blogs, magazines, petitions, and demonstrations, Vietnamese citizens in recent years have been publicly debating and criticizing government agencies, policies, and the ruling Communist Party. In this presentation, Dr. Kerkvliet will analyze this political ferment and authorities’ reactions, which have been a mixture of responsiveness, toleration, and repression.
