TALK: Speaking Out in Vietnam: Public Political Criticism in a Communist Party-Ruled Nation

February 7, 2019 @ 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM

About the Talk

Dr. Kerkvliet will speak on the title of his new book (of the same name) due out in June 2019 (Cornell University Press). In essays, books, blogs, magazines, petitions, and demonstrations, Vietnamese citizens in recent years have been publicly debating and criticizing government agencies, policies, and the ruling Communist Party. In this presentation, Dr. Kerkvliet will analyze this political ferment and authorities’ reactions, which have been a mixture of responsiveness, toleration, and repression.
