UH Mānoa Students and Faculty highlight Southeast Asia Research at the 2026 Association for Asian Studies Conference

Last March, the 2026 Association for Asian Studies (AAS) Conference was held in Vancouver, Canada. The CSEAS is delighted to share the participation of two UH Mānoa students, Areerat Worawongwasu and Xiaoyun Neo, who joined others to present Southeast Asian research at the AAS.

In Summer 2025, the pair joined a group of students from both UH Mānoa and Chiang Mai University to participate in Luce-Southeast Asia Political Ecology Field school in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The students participated in three panels focused on political ecology in Southeast Asia. At the conference, Neo and Assistant Professor Micah Fisher also shared reflections from the South Sulawesi Summer Field School, an experiential learning opportunity supported by the Matsunaga Institute. Through a collaboration with Hasanuddin University, students spent two weeks doing oral history research in rural Indonesia.
