Carrying Cultures

Carrying Cultures is a CSEAS initiative based on the Carrying Culture: Micronesia professional development course, developed by Dr. Mary Hattori, Justin Davies, and Dr. Ger Thao, that connects Southeast Asian studies to K-12 classrooms. Centering community knowledge, language, and creativity, it offers teacher-facing, culturally sustaining modules that blend oral history, art, and media—showing culture as something lived, carried, and continually renewed.
The Carrying Cultures series consist of 3 modules centering Hmong, Vietnamese, and Cambodian perspectives and experiences. Each module provides practical materials—syllabi, presentations, protocols, assignments, resource lists, and Padlets for sharing—to help educators support multilingual learners and engage classrooms with culturally responsive and relational teaching practices. The project bridges scholarship and lived experience to nurture empathy, critical reflection, and inclusive learning environments.
