About the Talk
While tourism in the Nglanggeran Tourism Village has been almost entirely halted by the pandemic, a cacao processing work unit run by women called Griya Cokelat (house of chocolate) continues to operate. The research examines women workers’ working conditions, their strategies in response to the pandemic, and how the pandemic shaped their lives.

About the Speaker
Dr. Wiwik Sushartami is a Spring 2022 Fulbright Visiting Scholar, based in the Department of Geography and Environment UHM. She is a Professor of Anthropology from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) in Indonesia. She received her MA in Southeast Asian Studies, from National U of Singapore, and her PhD in Cultural Anthropology from Leiden University, Netherland in 2012. She is currently the head of the Tourism Studies Program at UGM. Her work spans several themes, including media studies, heritage studies, women studies, and cultural tourism. Her current research focuses on women’s resilience in tourism during pandemics and heritage tourism authenticity.
