Invisible Worlds: Lesser Told Stories of Southeast Asia

May 15-16, 2026 | University of California, Riverside

General Description

Southeast Asia is a large and diverse area of the world. With that diversity, there is also a wide array of stories to be told. This year, SEASGRAD annual conference will be held at University of California, Riverside focuses on some of the untold or lesser stories of Southeast Asia and Southeast Asian Diasporas. The goal of the conference is to have everyone in attendance learn something new about Southeast Asian pasts, presents, and futures. The conference welcome submissions of research that are examining ideas, people, and stories that have been under-researched or misunderstood, as well as research that emphasizes Southeast Asia and its diasporas from all disciplines. As this is a graduate student conference, submissions from graduate students whose research is still in process are also welcomed.

Who Should Apply

  • Early-career graduate students
  • First or Second Year PhD Students
  • Prospective graduate students — MA and undergraduates completing senior theses
  • Both individual paper and organized panel submissions are welcome

Submission Details

  • Abstract deadline: February 15, 2026
  • Abstract length: up to 250 words
  • Submission format:
    • Individual papers or organized panels (3–4 papers + discussants)

Acceptance notifications will be sent by March 1, 2026.

Registration

There is no registration fee.

The conference will be in-person only.
