Allan Nevins Dissertation Prize — Society of American Historians

The Allan Nevins Dissertation Prize recognizes outstanding dissertations in American history for both literary distinction and significant contribution to historical knowledge. The prize includes $2,000 and publication by one of the Society’s publisher members, and is awarded at the Society’s annual meeting in New York in May.

    • Dissertations in American history, broadly defined (including American arts, literature, science, and biography)
    • Dissertation defended between January 1 and December 31, 2025

    • Evaluated on both literary merit and scholarly distinction

    • Department chair of the degree-granting department
    • Up to two dissertations per department
    • Digital submission in PDF format, including the author’s full contact information (phone and an email address valid in spring 2026)
