Book Talk Recording Now Available: He Who is Made Lord: Empire, Class, and Race in Postwar Singapore

The recording of Book Talk with Muhammad Suhail Mohamed Yazid (Harvard University Asia Center) is now available online.

In this talk, Suhail discussed his new book He Who is Made Lord (ISEAS–Yusof Ishak Institute), which revisits late colonial Singapore to uncover the politics of empire, class, and race surrounding the island’s titular office. The conversation, moderated by Dr. Barbara Watson Andaya, offers new insight into how colonial institutions shaped the postwar world and continue to influence Southeast Asia today.

He who is Made Lord

He Who is Made Lord visits late colonial Singapore to uncover the politics of the island’s titular office. As the representative of the British Crown, the institution connected Singapore not only to the United Kingdom, but also to different global and regional orders.
