Enlivening Southeast Asian Children’s Books: A Full-Day Workshop Series for Educators


Saturday, June 14, 2025, 10:00 AM – 4:30 PM (HST), Moore Hall 319, Tokioka Room

Join us for a full day of workshops that bring Southeast Asian children’s literature to life through drama, music, and visual arts. Led by talented storytellers and artists, each session offers hands-on activities and creative ways to engage with SEA children’s books.

Workshop Schedule:

Workshop #1: Lutung & the Bees
10:00 – 11:30 AM (HST) / 1:00 – 2:30 PM (PDT)
Leaders: Kirstin Pauka & I Made Moja
Explore Balinese legends and learn how to retell stories using shadow puppets.

Workshop #2: Two Friends, One World
1:00 – 2:30 PM (HST) / June 15, 7:00 – 8:30 AM (Philippines)
Leader: Pia Arboleda
Transform children’s stories into comic book form in this interactive session.

Workshop #3: The Orphan’s Harp
3:00 – 4:30 PM (HST) / June 15, 8:00 – 9:30 AM (Thailand)
Leader: Ben Fairfield
Create your own recycled instrument while exploring a Karen folktale.
