Time 3:00-4:30PM
Venue: Hamilton Library 306 (Hybrid)

Garrett Kam will speak about his work compiling a two-volume illustrated book about Mads Lange, the Danish merchant who settled in Bali in the 19th century. The 2-volume publication focuses on Bali during the late 18th to mid 19th centuries and is illustrated with over 500 artefacts from this period. The volumes include the background of early history and kingdoms up to the present and correlates events in Denmark, France, Britain, Netherlands, Java, Lombok, Sumbawa, Singapore, Malaya, Siam, Burma, British India, and China during the timeframe. Garrett will highlight some of the hidden messages of the featured artifacts.

Mads Johansen Lange (1807-1856) made Bali prosper during the mid-19th century. A Danish trader, he negotiated peace with the Dutch during the precolonial period on the island. He established a trading post at Kuta when it was a quiet fishing village. In order to procure lucrative trade deals, Lange presented the kings of Bali with luxury goods. He branded more than 500 such gifts with his name, image, or important scenes from his life. Portrait figures also illustrate personal events.
