Agriculture remains a very important sector of the Southeast Asian economies, and adequate strategic plans for development provide great opportunity to shape the sector and to improve lives of hundreds of millions of people living in the rural areas. Under the auspices of an ACIAR funded project to help with the research that underpinned the most recent Strategic Plan for Agriculture in Vietnam, Associate Professor Tiho Ancev and hist team conducted a review of strategic planning activities recently conducted in Indonesia, Thailand, Laos, and the Philippines, as well as in some developed countries (Australia, Canada, the US). In this talk, Associate Professor Ancev and his collaborator Ms Chi Nguyen will present the key conceptual components of strategic planning in agriculture and will provide a comparative analysis of recent strategic plans undertaken in these countries. They will offer some suggestions for the directions that strategic planning in agriculture in Southeast Asia should take in the future.
