Republicanism in Thailand, Then and Now

Thursday, March 18, 2021, 5:00 p.m. PST (3:00 p.m. HST)

Webinar: Republicanism in Thailand, Then and Now, with Patrick Jory, Associate Professor of Southeast Asian History, University of Queensland

Prof. Patrick Jory (University of Queensland) will discuss the long history of Thailand’s republican tradition. This tradition dates to the 1880s when a group of princes proposed limiting the power of the absolute monarchy. Since that time, many other efforts have been made in this tradition, with differing degrees of support and impact. However, since the rise of populist nationalist politician Thaksin Shinawatra in the early 2000s, and with uncertainty surrounding the succession, and an unpopular new king, republicanism has revived, this time with more liberal shades. This talk examines this tradition and tries to account for the resilience of Thailand’s monarchy.

Discussant: Lisandro Claudio, Assistant Professor of South & Southeast Asian Studies, UC Berkeley
