About the Webinar
The seminar aims to shed light on the interests and intentions of China and the responses of the Mekong countries with regard to China’s concept of building a Community with a Shared Future. Since the eight-party congress of the Communist Party of China in 2012, the concept has become one of the core concepts and principles guiding China’s foreign policy in the new era. In 2019, Cambodia and Laos signed the action plan to realise the vision. Myanmar has agreed in principle but has not signed the action. On the other hand, Thailand and Vietnam have certain reservations but are willing to cooperate with China to build a Community of Shared Future. Therefore, it is assumed that the concept will gain more pre-eminence in China’s foreign policy towards the region and it also partially normatively and materially shapes the evolving regional architecture and regional cooperation.
About the Speaker
Dr Chheang Vannarith is a public policy analyst and government relations strategist. Currently he is a Visiting Fellow at ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute. His research interest focuses on geopolitical and geo-economic analysis of the Mekong region. His latest article on “Cambodia’s embrace of Belt and Road Initiative: Managing asymmetries and maximising authority” got published in Asian Perspective (Spring 2021). He received his PhD in Asia Pacific Studies from Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (Japan), Leadership Certificate from the East-West Centre (United States), MA in International Relations from the International University of Japan, and BA in International Relations from the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam.
