A Bird’s-Eye View of the Malaysian Political Landscape

May 21, 2025, 4 – 5:30 PM (HST)

MALAYSIA STUDIES PROGRAMME

About the Hybrid Seminar

Forming part of the federal government from 2020 until 2022, Perikatan Nasional (PN or National Alliance) is Malaysia’s parliamentary opposition. In the 2022 general election, PN won 74 parliamentary seats in 12 states and two federal territories. The coalition took all parliamentary seats in Kelantan, Terengganu, and Perlis, and made important inroads in Selangor, Penang, and the Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory. PN benefited from a swing away from the erstwhile ruling coalition Barisan Nasional as well as an important component of the youth vote.

Beyond its role as opposition in parliament, PN is in power at the state level in Perlis, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu. These states, collectively termed the SG4 Group, have pooled resources and ideas to develop Northern Malaysia through resource sharing, joint planning, collective advocacy, and promoting more autonomy for state governments.

Malaysia is now roughly half-way in its electoral cycle, with a general election due by end-2027. With this as a backdrop, and in light of upcoming state elections in Sabah, Sarawak, Melaka and Johor, the leader of the country’s parliamentary opposition, Dato Seri Hamzah Zainudin, will share his perspectives on numerous issues. These include: the state of the country, Perikatan Nasional’s vision for the future, the coalition’s strategies for the upcoming electoral contests, and its vision for good governance in Malaysia.
