Vietnamese Cinema for Educators
Vietnamese Cinema for Educators is the next step in the partnership between the Vietnam Film Institute (VFI) and the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at the University of Hawaiʻi. The partnership was launched in 2007 when CSEAS initiated a series of academic courses that trained students with advanced language skills to translate and subtitle feature films from Southeast Asia. One of the most successful components of the translation and subtitling training focused on the cinema of Viet Nam. In 2010, CSEAS presented seventeen English subtitled feature films to VFI for use in their film archive. To date, CSEAS has subtitled over thirty classic feature films representative of the history of Vietnamese cinema spanning the period of 1959-2005. Users of this educational resource will find a production history of each film, a film synopsis, a bibliography of past reviews and writings related to each film, and a teacher’s guide to assist instructors using film in the classroom. We urge academic users to help us build this resource by alerting us to other resources that we might have missed in preparing these films for viewing, as well as letting us know how you use film in the classroom.
