The King and I at WCC Palikū Theatre

September 8 - October 1

Windward Community College and I’m A Bright Kid Foundation present, The King and I, September 8—October 1 at the Palikū Theatre. The award-winning Broadway hit by Rodgers and Hammerstein recounts the richly textured tale of Anna Leonowens and her son as they arrive at the Royal Palace in Bangkok, Thailand.

The King of Siam will be portrayed by Michael Ng, a local actor and drama instructor at Kaimuki High School. Allison Chu, Miss Hawaiʻi2016, has the role of Tuptim and her love interest, Lun Tha, will be played by George Benaventes. Mary Hicks, ʻIolani School music and drama instructor is directing the production with choreography by Andrew Sakaguchi. Bright’s eldest son and Royal Hawaiian Band Director, Clarke Bright, is orchestra conductor. One of Bright’s former students, New York City actress/singer Kathleen Stuart, has returned home to Hawaiʻi to reprise her role of Anna. Stuart played the role under Bright’s direction at the Castle Performing Arts Center in 1998.

Windward CC student Daphnei Hussein will play the nanny to the King’s children, and is a dancer in the show.

Show dates and times
The King and I will be performed Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. with a Sunday matinee at 4:00 p.m. September 8—October 1.

About I’m A Bright Kid Foundation

The I’m A Bright Kid Foundation is a non-profit organization started by Ron Bright’s former students. Bright was Castle High School’s theatre director and instructor for more than 40 years and was instrumental in founding the Castle Performing Arts Center. After retiring from teaching, Bright guest directed a string of highly acclaimed musicals with Palikū Theatre until his passing in 2015.
