The Portuguese began to trade with the island of Timor in the early 16th century and colonized it in mid-century. Skirmishing with the Dutch in the region eventually resulted in an 1859 treaty in which Portugal ceded the western portion of the island.

In April, Deputy Minister José Luis Guterres formed a new political party, Frenti-Mudanca, a Fretilin reform party.

Following a brief civil war, Portuguese Timor was invaded by Indonesia in 1975. Over the next 24 years, East Timorese suffered displacement, sexual violence, torture and other abuses. More than 100,000 people died due to conflict. In 1999, shortly after the fall of Indonesia’s Soeharto regime, 78.5 percent of East Timorese voted for independence in a UN-organized referendum.

East Timor’s road to independence – achieved on 20 May 2002 – was long and traumatic. The people of the first new nation of the century suffered some of the worst atrocities of modern times in their struggle for self-determination.
