via Prof. Nancy I. Cooper:

Dear colleagues, students, friends, and fans of Alice G. Dewey, on behalf of Rhonda Dewey, I would like to announce that the memorial/celebration of life for Emeritus Professor of Anthropology, Alice G. Dewey, will be held on September 23, 6 p.m. in Room 36 of the Music Dept. complex on the corner of University Ave. and Dole St. Room 36 is a small free-standing classroom inside a courtyard, next to Orvis Auditorium. Parking on parts of nearby Dole Street and University Ave. is free on Saturdays, while parking in the Music Building parking lot will be $6. You will need to go down Campus Road past the Music Dept. to pick up your ticket at a booth, then turn around to come back to the Music Complex parking lot.

Alice truly loved Javanese gamelan music and attended most rehearsals and concerts over four decades of the performing group in Hawaii. Members of the U.H. Javanese Gamelan Ensemble have volunteered to play a few pieces for the memorial.

Aloha/casual dress is appropriate and there will be light refreshments after the program. This is an internal announcement and the event will be publicly announced closer to the date. We hope to see you there to honor the life of a remarkable woman.

[In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that any donations in honor of Alice be made out to “Hawaii Gamelan Society”, a non-profit organization of which Alice was a board member, that supports Indonesian performing arts. Checks may be sent to Nancy I. Cooper, 2424 Maile Way, Saunders 346, Honolulu HI 96822, if you do not plan to attend the memorial. There will also be a calabash for donations available at the memorial.]
