Condoms to Fight Poverty
Mechai Viravaidya is the Founder and Chairman of the Population and Community Development Association and is a widely acclaimed leader in the fields of public health, education and community development. Since 1974, he has worked to initiate community-based family planning services and groundbreaking HIV/AIDS prevention activities throughout Southeast Asia. In this animated take on his talk from TEDxChange, Mechai Viravaidya talks about his creative approach to promoting family planning and condom use in Thailand. To end poverty and save the lives of women and children, he tried everything from condom blowing competitions to a “cops and rubbers” campaign–all to great success. Thailand has reduced HIV transmission rates by 90 percent.
