In YES OR NO Thai audiences were introduced to a story of self-discovery and romance between two university girls, Kim (Supanart Jittaleela) and Pai (Sucharat Manaying). While movies with gay themes are not uncommon in Thailand, this film took another step by being the first openly lesbian film.

Thai film blogger Wise Kwai notes, “beneath the surface there are at least a couple of meaningful messages. One is that love is pretty confusing, even more so if you are unsure of your sexuality. The other is that entering into a relationship takes courage, and you need double the usual amount of bravery if such a relationship goes against what is deemed normal.”

A low earner at the box office in Thailand, it became a huge hit in the DVD markets of Taiwan, Macau, China, Cambodia, the Philippines, and Indonesia (where it was banned from theatre screenings). The incredible response resulted in a flood of orders into the director’s Bangkok office for t-shirts, posters, CD soundtracks and DVDs and lit up the fan blogs across Southeast Asia.
